Study of the Arnfield Gravity Escapement

The thing about clocks and watches that interest me the most are escapements.  For the final year of the BA Horology course at Birmingham School of Jewellery I had to build a clock.  I decided to build a clock with an interesting escapement and the escapement I chose was the Arnfield Gravity Escapement.  An animation of the escapement can be seen here.

Depthing Tool

A simple depthing tool

A traditional depthing tool can be quite an expensive piece of kit.  There are several books that give details of a simplified depthing tool (e.g. Making an Eight Day Longcase Clock by Alan Timmins or A Weight Driven 8-day Wall Clock by John Wilding) that is quite easy to make.  This tool, however, can only used when the pinion heads and wheels are separate from their arbors.

As part of the BA Horology course my final year project will be to build a clock.  I intend to make the pinions separate from their arbors and will therefore be able to use one of these simpler depthing tools.

Also, the tool can be used during the process of making new or replacement pallets.

 I was planning to replace the pallets in a clock I was servicing, and as I will need the tool next year for my final year project, I decided to go ahead and make a depthing tool.  I modified the design slightly to make all parts easier to replace and to suit the tools I have available in my workshop.

Mini Clock Project Complete!

As part of the BA Horology course at Birmingham School of Jewellery we make components for a "Mini Clock".  The clock is not intended to be completed and to run, but valuable experience is gained by making each of the components that would go to make up a real clock.

With the addition of a Recoil Escapement the mini clock is now complete and we move on to other projects.

British Horological Institute Constructing Clock Components Examination Finished!

I have finished making my Carriage Clock: Jumper, Collet & Post Assembly.

Some people may do a "before and after" shot.  Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the materials before I started and I took one after I had finished.  So I've ended up with an "after and after" shot :-)
